Treatment Approaches

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (including trauma focused-CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of psychological treatment that aims to challenge negative patterns of thinking and behaviour by challenging and replacing unhelpful beliefs, attitudes and thoughts with healthier and more adaptive ones. This can subsequently affect emotions and behaviours. CBT involves working with a therapist, who will help an individual to identify and evaluate the accuracy of thoughts and beliefs and then develop strategies to challenge and change them. CBT has been demonstrated to be effective for various mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), among others.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing life experiences, traumatic memories, and negative beliefs. It’s widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but can also be beneficial for anxiety, depression, phobias, and other mental health challenges.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is an evidence-based approach combining Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychoanalytic techniques to address deep-rooted emotional patterns known as maladaptive schemas. Developed by Dr. Jeff Young, it’s particularly effective for treating trauma, personality disorders, and chronic mental health challenges. By exploring how early life experiences shape thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, Schema Therapy helps individuals break negative patterns through techniques like imagery rescripting, emotional expression, and role-playing. Though typically long-term, it offers lasting change by addressing the root causes of emotional distress and improving well-being and relationships.

Solution Focused Therapy

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a type of therapy that emphasizes solutions over problems. It is based on the idea that individuals have the capacity to create their own solutions to the issues that they are facing. This therapy is considered to be a goal-oriented and future-focused approach which does not delve deeply into the past but rather focuses on finding solutions and moving forward.

The therapy usually starts by identifying a specific goal or problem that the individual would like to work on and then focuses on identifying and building on the individual’s strengths, abilities, and resources to help them achieve that goal.

This approach is known for its flexibility, as the therapist can adapt to the specific needs of the individual, and it is also known for its brevity as it is typically short-term and goals oriented.

Solution-focused brief therapy is used to treat a variety of issues such as relationship problems, depression, anxiety, and addiction. It is widely used in organizations and schools as well as in clinical settings.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that is specifically designed to help individuals who have experienced trauma, such as sexual assault or combat. The therapy aims to help individuals understand and process their traumatic experiences, in order to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other conditions that may arise as a result of the trauma.

CPT is typically a 12-session, manual-based therapy, that includes education about trauma and its effects, as well as cognitive and written exercises aimed to address key cognitive distortions resulting from the traumatic experience, as well as other behavioural interventions. The goal of CPT is to help patients to identify, challenge, and reframe maladaptive thoughts related to the traumatic event, in order to reduce symptoms of PTSD such as avoidance, intrusive thoughts, and hyperarousal.
